If there’s one thing every horse kid can agree on, it’s this: carrots make everything better. Whether you’re heading to the barn with treats in your pocket or dreaming about your favorite pony, this bright and cheerful carrot craft is a perfect fit.
This suncatcher carrot is a fun, low-mess project that’s ideal for summer camp, pony camp, or a horse-themed afternoon at home. It’s simple enough for younger kids but still turns out cute enough that everyone will want to hang theirs up.
Why This Craft is Perfect for Horse Lovers
This isn’t just any spring craft, it’s a horse kid craft. Carrots are basically the unofficial snack of the barn, so this project feels right at home in any equestrian setting.
It’s also a great activity to mix in during downtime at camp. Think: after riding lessons, during a break from the heat, or as a calm activity before heading back out to the barn.
Plus, it doubles as a keepsake kids can take home and hang in their window as a reminder of their time at pony camp.

Materials
- Tissue paper (yellow, orange, green)
- Tape or contact paper
- Scissors
- Construction paper (orange and green)
Instructions
- Cut the carrot shape – orange for the carrot and green for the top.
Cut a carrot shape from construction paper. For a true suncatcher effect, cut out the center so you’re left with a carrot-shaped frame.
- Cut tissue paper squares
Cut small squares from orange and yellow tissue paper for the carrot, and green for the leafy top. Imperfect shapes work perfectly here.
- Attach the contact paper
Place contact paper (or tape) behind the carrot frame with the sticky side facing up. This will hold all your tissue pieces in place.
- Fill the carrot with color
Add the tissue paper squares, overlapping as you go, until the entire carrot is filled in. Kids can mix colors or create patterns.
- Trim the edges
Once finished, trim off any excess contact paper for a clean, finished look.

- Set up a “carrot craft station” with all supplies ready to go
- Let kids personalize their carrots with names or fun designs
- Hang them in a window at camp for a colorful display, or send them home as a sweet souvenir
