A horse grooming kit is by far, one of the most important must-have supplies for any horse owner or rider. But, what should you put in a horse grooming kit? Believe it or not, you can start out with some simple grooming essentials. We took our DIY horse grooming kit a step further and personalized our homemade kit!

Horse Grooming Kits
Any quick google search for a “horse grooming kit” will produce pages and pages of products you can buy from various tack shops and other retailers. There is a wide variety out there of different kit styles! Some of them come filled with grooming tools and others arrive empty and ready for you to add your supplies.
How many grooming kits do you need?
We have several grooming kits over here. We have lots of grooming tools that stay in our barn. Then we have a grooming kit that lives in our horse trailer. That kit is used for horse shows or any other occasions that find us taking our herd off property. My daughter also keeps a grooming kit in her locker at her lesson barn.
Last summer, we were putting together a fresh grooming kit for the trailer when I had the idea to have a little fun with the kit’s appearance. I decided to personalize the kit. This not only gave it a cute look, but also helped to keep our items separate from everyone else’s tools.

What goes into a horse grooming kit?
There is a wide variety of what you can put into a grooming kit for your horses. Some of the items are pretty standard (for example the brushes, a hoof pick, etc) but other items will of course be customized for your horses.
You can use this general list as a guide, but feel free to add whatever works best for your crew. You can also add and remove items based on the time of year. For example, here in the Northeastern US, we (thankfully!) don’t need fly spray during the winter months!
- Curry comb
- Dandy brush (harder, stiff bristled brush)
- Soft Brush
- Mane Comb (also a mane pulling comb)
- Hoofpick
- Shedding blade
- Sweat scraper
- Hoof polish
- Fly Spray
- Mane detangling spray

Personalized Horse Grooming Kit
A few months ago, I was cruising the aisles at the local craft store and I came across these clear storage totes and immediately knew that I wanted to turn one into a grooming kit. The tote is clear and has a removable storage tray on top which is perfect for holding little accessories.

I liked that the lid is held down with latches and the top features a handle. Perfect for toting around the farm or at a show!

The smooth plastic sides were just begging for some color, so I decided to cut some vinyl on my Silhouette Cameo to decorate it.
You can personalize your kit with your pony’s kit with her name or the rider/owner’s name… or both!

Supplies for Making a Personalized Grooming Kit for Your Horse
- Several or all of the grooming supplies listed above
- Plastic storage tote
- Letter stickers or (if you have one) vinyl cut from a Silhouette or Cricut machine
Feel free to decorate your tote however you want. I decorated just one side of our tote but you could decorate more if you’d like.
After I placed the vinyl on our tote, it was ready to load up with supplies!

That’s it!
So easy to put together and now we have a practical and convenient and horse grooming kit to tote around!
This craft would be a wonderful pony club or summer camp activity at pony camp.
Let us know if you decide to give these kits a try and tell us how they turned out for you! If you post a picture of your kit on social media, feel free to tag us – we’d love to see it!
